100 | Episode 100

This is the 100th episode!

The podcast has gone through several evolutions including the format, personnel, and of course the locations in which it’s recorded. It started in the small hot box studio in a WeWork, then the guys eventually began recording at Gotham Podcast Studios. And, today, due to the pandemic, they are recording from their homes. But, the show has only gotten better over time.

In this episode, the guys celebrate this milestone by strolling down memory lane and talking about the ups and downs of producing a talk show with your friends.  We want to thank everyone who has had a hand in getting the show to this point. You all are appreciated and we look forward to bringing you more great content as we explore life from the perspective of four Black men enjoying life after 40.

This episode of Decoding 40 is packed with laughs, behind the scenes audio, and so much more.

Allegedly! | Episode 99

After a little over a year in the making, L discusses his new business venture olive oil infused with CBD called DRZL.  Alaric joins us from L.A. but his Apple laptop seems to have a worm in it.  Meanwhile, Vin is having a pretty uneventful week except for refinancing his home. Lastly, Mack is listening to the universe to learn patience and acceptance.

Are we living in the “upside down”? Left is right. Right is left. Wrong is right. Football players, basketball players, and YouTubers are now boxing professional boxers, celebrities are running for office and national political parties have amped up the fighting within their own ranks. Everything is completely out of whack!

The Audacity of Caucacity | Episode 98

This week’s Check-In begins with Mack and his chirping fire alarm. He talks about his trip to a shopping outlet and finds it empty, but manages to find a pair of Air Force Ones. For Vin, it’s back to work and business as usual. Alaric has a visit from father time when he wakes up with aches and pains. Lastly, Leon shares some unfortunate news of his godson, Zion Rogers, untimely passing.  May God bless his spirit and his soul Rest in Power.

Back in the news, is the trash bag known as Amy “Call the Cops” Cooper.  The crew discusses the lawsuit she’s filed against her former employer claiming racial discrimination.   The caucacity of this woman is the easy winner for This Week in Racism.

Let Me Get A No. 10 Billion | Episode 97

L starts the episode talking about his new quilty pleasure on MTV called How Far is Tattoo Far;  Vin’s vacation is winding down and he and his wife and their dog enjoy a nature hike; Alaric and his wife have their first adult outing since the pandemic, and Mack is resolving some infrastructure problems at home in the midst of paying $45 in smoothies?!

Next, we discuss Byron Allen and his lawsuit filed against McDonald’s.  McDonald’s spends a measly $5M of their $1.6 billion advertising budget with Black media outlets. Meanwhile, the Black community contributes to 40% of their profits. Something is definitely fishy and it’s not those nasty fish filets.

We discuss the Amazon original movie Without Remorse with Michael B. Jordan.  Was Jodie Turner-Smith miscast in this role? We also talk about the shift in thinking about compensating college athletes. We also discuss Ashli Babbitt who was killed by law enforcement as a result of her taking part in the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Her family is suing for wrongful death. Look At God! | Episode 94

Welcome to another episode of Decoding 40!

Spring is in full swing and Alaric’s regular gardener is too busy to take care of his garden.  He finds a replacement and finds some ancestral justice. Vin discusses his nature walk with Mike and Leon finding out the hard way how three miles can turn into six miles. L.O. discusses his perspective of the hike and his weird commute via the PATH to N.J.  Mack is trying to finalize his plans for his second wedding anniversary and his wife’s first Mother’s Day.

Next, we discuss the incredulous remarks by Senator Tim Scott, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Representative Jim Clyburn who all fell into the sunken place to suggest that America “is not a racist country.”  What does this mean for the struggle of Black Americans in the US? And, why have the Democrats once again decided to forfeit the high ground while bargaining the safety and livelihood of Black people?

Lost Innocence | Episode 93

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding40.

We are all present and physically safe, but the ever-present threat of law enforcement and the subsequent PTSD that we all carry is weighing heavy on us all. The Check-In this week includes L watching Netflix and Verzuz to escape; Mack totally burying his head into his work; Alaric decided to take a harmless trip to the park with his family until he finds himself caught in the DMX funeral procession and an unfortunate incident occurs; and, Vin wraps it up with his recent discussion with his 13-year old daughter about her first interaction with the police.

So, this week we talk about “The Talk” and how we each try to keep our kids safe when encountering law enforcement.  What used to be a standard conversation about how to be respectful and courteous when dealing with the police has morphed into a lesson of survival.

Next, we discuss whether or not to boycott Georgia over the new voting laws intended to disenfranchise mostly Democratic and Black voters. We all agree that some economic and political pressure should be applied, but what’s the best strategy?

Better Call Kareem | Episode 91

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40.

Mack starts off with his home shopping woes; Vin finally got his fence installed and a refund from Lowes; Leon received his first Covid vaccine shot; and, Alaric checks in with some sad news, his father-in-law succumbing to cancer after a long fight.

Since this is our 91st episode, we decided to talk about the significance of that number as it was the year we all pretty much started on our journey of adulthood.  The fellas reminisce on prom stories; going to college and all the other craziness of being young men at the start of the 90s.
