Episode 146 | The It Factor [w/ E.S.$.O] Part I

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! Looks like we’re getting hella love this week in streams from Oklahoma City, OK and we couldn’t be more grateful. The Check-In starts with the crew sharing their Father’s Day experience starting with a BBQ at Vin’s house. Jokes, food, good conversations, and an almost overdose of a THC edible capped the day’s events.

After a long hiatus from an actual studio, the guys got together with E.S.$.O. E.S.$.O is a cultural Influencer, celebrity music manager, entertainment executive, and entrepreneur. He can be seen on a few of the internet’s hottest shows: 8 At The Table and Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion. The guys start the conversation with the ridiculous Rolling Stone Top 200 Hip Hop albums and delve into topics including the recipe for a culture-shifting album, Oprah’s breast, Meg the Stallions feet, and what is behind star power when it comes to entertainers. Be sure to listen to this episode and the conclusion of the interview next week.

Dumbo's Revenge [w/ Kel Spencer] | Ep 145

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! We want to send a special thanks to all of the listeners in Baltimore, Maryland who streamed us the most last week. On the Check-In this week, Vin hangs out with an old friend visiting the city and stops by the show’s favorite dive bar Stolen Jackets for drinks and then headed over to The Fearless Artist installation. L.O. gets outside with the family and attends a few cultural events including the Kamasi Washington concert, The Lincoln Center Orchestral Tribute to the Notorious BIG concert, and The Fearless Artist event. And, Alaric talks about the joys and pains of putting together The Fearless Artist event with the dozens of moving parts, artists, and their works.

This week the guys welcome back renaissance man and friend of the show, Kel Spencer. Kel posted a timely and poignant meme on his Instagram that lists a few of the gifts NOT to buy that special guy in your life for Father’s Day. Also, the guys talk about Rolling Stone’s abysmal list of the 200 Greatest Hip Hop Albums of all time. The top 20 albums are a blasphemous arrangement and we hope that Rolling Stone continues to receive all of the hellish backlash it deserves for this list.

The guys also talk about the outrageous and fictional story that swept the internet about a murderous elephant. The elephant had supposedly not only trampled the 70-year-old woman but returned to her funeral service to desecrate her body. They say elephants never forget. What could this woman have done to deserve this kind of retribution?

Top Billin' | Ep 144

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! Thank you to all of the listeners in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas areas streaming our show heavily last week. On the Check-In this week, Vin & his wife finally put the finishing touches on his deck and backyard but what did it cost them? Alaric honors a long-lasting father and son tradition by taking his son for his first haircut. L.O. returns to the planet Brooklyn with the family to enjoy the sites and sounds of an African street festival.

This week the guys discuss a bizarre altercation between an assistant manager at Dollar Tree who took her job too seriously as she assaulted a male customer repeatedly. The man did not retaliate for the most part, but this begs the question: when is it appropriate for a man to defend himself from a woman and fight back? Check out the video for yourself and let us know: https://bit.ly/398YLw2

Next, we discuss the misguided and trainwreck of a candidate, Herschel Walker, as he seeks to represent the great state of Georgia in the U.S. Senate. And, finally, the guys weigh in on the latest celebrity beef between Mo’Nique and DL Hughley. Is Mo’Nique only able to handle disputes in fiery public displays? And, who’s contract was the right contract?

Earth is Ghetto AF | Ep. 143

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! Thanks to Wichita, Kansas for showing us love in streams last week. This week’s starts with the latest installment of Where in the World is Alaric? as he checks in from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee where he’s been working on his latest project. L.O. talks about how ghetto earth has become with the subway shooters, crazy Caucasians, and homicidal homeless people, he’s has had enough with the outside. Vin finishes his first audible book project as the narrator for Thread That Binds and signs up for some unsolicited back pains after doing some much-needed yard work.

Next, we discuss Wells Fargo and its dubious hiring practices that have recently been revealed to have a bias against Black candidates. After being a part of the mortgage crisis and losing a legal battle about prejudicial hiring practices Wells has doubled down by holding fake interviews for its Black applicants. It seems like this bank loves our money just as long as we’re not handling it.

No Happy Endings | Ep 142

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40. This week we thank our friends in Singapore for tuning in with the greatest number of streams this week! For this week’s Check-In, Vin celebrates his wife’s birthday with some less than stellar edibles but makes up for it by gifting her a massage package at a nearby spa. Alaric comes close to losing his cool at the local CVS. They make him wait an hour, all to tell him they didn’t have what he needed. Self-checkout comes to Harlem’s Whole Foods much to L.O.’s delight, but will he finds himself on an episode of Curb your Enthusiasm when a clerk can only handle one person at a time?

Next, we discuss the mass shooting that occurred in Buffalo, New York, at a Tops Friendly Markets store in the predominantly Black, East Side neighborhood. Ten black people were killed and three other people were injured by a radicalized 18-year-old white supremacist. In between recording and releasing this show, tragically, an 18-year-old resident of Uvalde, Texas, fatally shot 19 students and two teachers and wounded 17 others at Robb Elementary School. The killer, a student at a nearby high school, earlier that day shot his grandmother in the face after an argument, killing her as well. We support every community and everyone affected personally by these violent attacks, we also recognize that it is time for action and it’s time to hold politicians, city officials, and silent moderates accountable for change to keep our fellow citizens safer.

Nigcels Gone Wild | Ep 141

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! As this episode drops on the eve of what would be the Notorious B.I.G.’s 50th birthday, we give, thanks to Brooklyn, NY for showing us love and having the best increase in streams last week. This week, Alaric gives his wife the greatest gift, a Mother’s Day–without kids. Vin buys an espresso machine that wasn’t quite up to his standards and it looks like Amazon pulled a Wish.com. L.O. has another run-in with Seamless when a late-night burger order turns into a battle with customer service.

Next, we discuss Kevin Samuels untimely and how even after the announcement of his death he still remains a polarizing figure. We witnessed some women rejoice, some men shed tears and most of us just moved on with our lives. But, we do take some time to discuss the fallout of his philosophies on women, men, and their relationships. We then discuss the leaked Supreme Court brief that looks to overturn Roe v Wade and the overall archaic thinking associated with this pending decision should it be released.

Lastly, in the latest installment of What’s the Scenario the guys discuss a spouse who was found out to have been maintaining a secret bank account in the event she and her husband were ever to be divorced. Should spouses be able to keep private accounts to protect them in the event of a marriage dissolving?

FTP, Respectfully

Welcome back to another episode of Decoding 40! And, thanks to Atlanta for having the greatest increase in streams over the last couple of weeks. This week, Alaric finds himself in the throes of a fierce game of Old Maid with his daughter, while balancing with work. Leon reviews his latest Apple TV addiction Severance. He also thinks he might have a touch of carpal tunnel syndrome to boot. Vin has a movie shoot on his block and takes on the old man role by complaining about the lack of parking spaces along with the general nuisance of the whole situation.

In This Week in Racism, we discuss the situation in Syracuse, NY, where an 8-year-old Black child was arrested and treated horribly by the police for allegedly stealing a bag of chips. It’s a heated discussion as the guys discuss the impropriety of the police and what could have prevented this citation. Lastly, we discuss student loans and what, if anything, the Democrats aren’t doing, to offer relief to borrowers saddled with this debt.
