This week we welcome Muta’Ali Muhammad, an award-winning film director from Westchester County, NY.  His latest feature documentary “Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn” aired on HBO in August. His past documentary films include the award-winning “Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee”, which featured notable guests including Harry Belafonte, Alan Alda, and Spike Lee. Muta’Ali is determined that his artistic body of work be wholly focussed on what he calls “Love, Art & Activism”. Muta’Ali is also the grandson of Hollywood royalty, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

Other topics include the bold vision of Ashley Scott and Rene Walter as they facilitated the purchase of 97 acres in Wilkinson County Georgia; and the Verzuz battle between two of our new favorite aunties: Patty Labelle and Gladys Knight.

Chadwick Forever | Episode 63

The guys start with the weekly Check-In with Mack going back to the chiropractor and takes his car for a wash. Vin goes on an adventure to Mountain Creek Resort to there Treescape Park to engage in some “whipipo” activities. Rick rejoices now that he and the wife are finally baby-free in the bedroom!  L.O. rounds it out with another installment of this Ghetto House.

As we all know 2020 has been no stranger to tragedy and this past week we lost three more icons John Thompson, Cliff Robinson and the Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman.  We can all agree that the loss of Chadwick was a hard one to take.  He was a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood and a global symbol that brought millions of people joy and hope.

Coach John Thompson and his legendary career at Georgetown helped shape so many young Black men.  Under his tutelage, players such as Patrick Ewing and Alan Iverson, and many other men evolved into professional athletes, businessmen, and cultural icons. And, Cliff Robinson, who succumbed to a yearlong battle with lymphoma at the age of 53 was a UConn basketball and NBA star. They all will be remembered!

In This Week In Racism, we discuss the scumbag, Kyle Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse is the 17-year old radicalized white male savage who traveled to Wisconsin, with his mother, armed with an AR-15, and killed two protestors and injured another.

New Mic, Who Dis? | Episode 62

NOTE: This episode may include content that some people will find triggering.

Mack starts off the show with a surprising announcement that has been a long-time coming. The show continues with the weekly Check-In.

“This Old Ghetto House” is still going strong and L.O. shares the latest episode in which we find out what happens when uneven walls go up and two competent Jamaican carpenters come to the rescue. Vin rants about the ongoing homeless problem in the city that seems to get worse with each passing day. In lighter news, Rick’s back to work and he’s ready to go.  Anxious like a kid before the first day of school but first he has to complete his son’s new bedroom. Lastly, Mack shares an experience about his visit to the chiropractor.  At first, he was a non-believer, but after a few physical adjustments and a certain pillow, could he be sold on the science?

We also discuss Nas’ latest album King’s Disease, the Democratic National Convention, police brutality and HBO’s powerful and must-see documentary “Storm over Brooklyn”  that retells the story of the 1989 murder of Yusef Hawkins.

You’ll hear all of this and more on this episode of Decoding 40.

Skrool Daze | Episode 61

On this episode of Decoding 40, we start by discussing Jam Master Jay’s killers being indicted and Mack recuses himself from the conversation about notorious Queens’ drug figures from the 80’s and 90’s, so we move on to the Check-In.

Alaric is preparing to convert his wife’s office into a bedroom for his youngest kid. This will mark the first time in 4 years that Alaric and his wife will have a bedroom to themselves. Vin helps him move some heavy furniture and gets paid in beer and veggie patties. Leon is still trapped in a never ending episode of This Ghetto House. Leon finds out that old time building material is hard to demolish. Mack recounts a questionable experience with a famous, but unnamed civil rights activist.Mack is also looking into getting a new AC and somehow does not check with the ICEMan aka Leon for recommendations.

The first topic we tackle is the addition of Kamala Harris as the vice presidential candidate for the Democratic party. What does the nomination of the first Black and South Asian-American woman for vice president of the U.S. mean? If the Biden/Harris ticket wins in November, is it a true test of the country’s progress for racial and social justice? Is she the right pick to further the movement?

Next we talk about the news report featuring a real life Clayton Bigsby aka Daniel Sims. He was adopted by a white family, attended an all white skrool and would die if Confederate monuments were removed.

Finally, we share what we are drinking in This Week’s Libation and talk about a new study that says men should limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day. Can we comply? Probably not.

Gluten Free Racism | Episode 60

In this week’s Check-In, Rick is trying to figure out what’s going on with his mustache and beard combination. Go to @alaricphoto on IG and let him know if he’s more Breaking Bad or a Brooklyn van driver. In an unusual turn of events, Vin is happy this week after getting a huge raise and getting back money from his mortgage company. L.O. is well rested and fed this week but, unfortunately he’s still dealing with contruction in his apartment and incompetent plumbers.

Mack comes out of his Covid-19 free cocoon and ventures to whole foods in search of safer shopping. He follows this story with a rant about masks and feels people who do not wear masks should be fined.

In the next segment, we tackle the issue of kids going back to school and how we feel as parents. With a lack of solid planning and leadership, we along with other parents appear to be struggling with the lack of planning and funding to mitigate the risk to everyone that would occupy the school building.

Next, we discuss NFL players and their propensity to get into trouble with charges that range from domestic violence to public drunkenness. Is it a character flaw? CTE? Or, are they just targets because of their fame and position.

Lastly, we discuss if Black people be racist and what does it mean to be racist.

In other news, check out the Dear You Project as Decoding 40’s very own gives you some insight behind the soul of the man that is L.O.

Let’s all continue to put pressure on the following people and offices to see that justice is delivered for Breonna and her family.

Are You Dumb? | Episode 59

Have you ever been hangry? We start the Check-In with L.O. retelling his latest experience with Grubhub/Seamless who clearly has him confused with someone who goes for the okie doke by offering him 50% off for food that was never delivered. Rick talks his standoff with a litterbug neighbor who thought it was ok to dump trash in front of his house.  Vin rants about the homeless problem in the subway system and the feckless mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio. Mack wraps up the segment with his talks of COVID-19 fears in his neighborhood and how no one is taking the mandated health precautions seriously in the Bronx.

In the next segment, we discuss our personal wellness plans and how we are maintaining our physical and mental health throughout the pandemic. We all know that it’s time to push away from the comfort foods and start eating better and exercising. It’s also important to seek a mental health profession to keep us grounded and discuss how this affects our minds.

Lastly, we discuss the Breonna Taylor case and it’s connection to a gentrification program named the Vision Russell plan. The relationship between the Mayor’s office, the city planning and police department are raising some serious questions of impropriety that may be having a direct impact on the delayed justice so many seek for Breonna.

Let’s all continue to put pressure on the following people and offices to see that justice is delivered for Breonna and her family.

Unbeweavable | Episode 58

The crew checks in to get the latest on each other’s lives.  Vin shares a subway story about a vandal. L.O. is still going through construction in his house and with every passing day they seem to find more things wrong. Mack has decided to get a life coach to help him organize his life. He’s also decided to automate his home to make his life easier. Rick’s getting back to work after months of the entertainment industry on pause because of the pandemic.

The discussion then moves to man weaves. Increasingly, men of color are turning to cosmetic ways of dealing with hair loss. Some have gone as far as follicle replacement, but the man weave has started to become extremely popular. It’s less invasive and seems to be taking years off men’s age. The crew discusses it and weighs in on the new options available and discusses who in the crew would get one.

The final topic is all about Joe Biden and his impending pick for his running mate. The rumbling throughout the media seems to believe Biden will not only pick a Black woman. Would it be foolish for Biden to not ride the wave of the BLM movement and pick one of the more qualified Black women? Or, are the Democrats and white America going to rely on maintaining the status quo and the usual politricks and opt for a White woman as the presumptive vice-presidential pick?

America! F.U. Pay Me! (f/ Dr. Raymond Winbush) | Episode 57

The guys start the show with the weekly check in with the crew and see what’s good. The guys catch up on air conditioners, baking bread, upgrading the backyard and vacation planning in the middle of a pandemic.

The major topic tackled this week is reparations in America with the help of scholar Dr. Ray Winbush. The topic of reparations has been gaining steam over the passing years and Dr. Winbush gives us a lesson on the history of the reparations movement, the current status and his thoughts on the future of the movement.

The crew also pays its respects to Congressman John Lewis and the Reverend C.T. Vivian who both transitioned on the same day.  These human rights pioneers both dedicated their lives for betterment of Black people in America and across the world. They will both be sorely missed, but their legacy is strong and enduring.

You’ll hear all this and more in this week’s episode of Decoding 40. Be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook Instagram and  Patreon.

Snacks & Stacks| Episode 56

This week’s show starts off with the crew discussing their favorite snacks. Three of the fellas indulge in a variety of healthy snacks like mixed nuts and trail mix. Vin chooses to indulge in junk food like chips, cookies and cupcakes. Probably not a good look at 46, so hopefully Vin gets his wellness plan together sooner than later.

We also discuss how much money is too much money? There is no shortage of rich people in America, one statistic shows that 80% of America’s wealth is controlled by less than 1% of the population. That 1% control’s 25 trillion dollars and we still suffer from social ills.

Rolling with the topic of money we tackle the age old question: what is your magic number to to stop working? Is it 10 million or 100 million? We all in one form or another dream of hitting our magic number that will give us the power to say two words forever–I QUIT!
